Final animation

Here is the final draft of my animation, its based on light graffiti, I feel like it is an appropriate abstract animation that represents the repetitiveness of the music whilst also sounding quite like your in a trance or having a trip, I tried to make the animation as close to this as possible without using a narrative or physical human presence, whilst sticking to the methods of graphic design that I am particularily interested in such as photography.

Instrument iconography.

Eventually I decided that the underlying beat sounded very hypnotic, so I decided that a circular or spiral pattern would best represent this in terms of denotations. When the drums kick in they are very fast and sharp so I decided to use stars based on their angles and sharp points, they could pop up every beat. During the song there is a faint tinkle which makes me imagine falling, because of this I have decided to do some form of falling pattern such as rain which could be chroma keyed over the top of whatever image there was. Occasionally there is a miniature drum burst which breaks the norm, for these i have decided to just use any form of chaotic shape to encode the anarchy that the music implies. At the end I wish to make some sort of typography or logo as a form of sign off. Hopefully the video will turn out very neon and trance like, almost like that of a rave.

single shots

After much thought I decided that a split screen was a bad idea, so i rearranged the planning to the key instrument in different areas of the song. that way there can still be a focus but the other instruments can carry on. I like this idea as it almost feels like a home made equalizer.

Performance animation

After giving up on the concept of narrative I looked into ways I could produce a performance video without the use of instruments etc. I decided to try and make my own symbolic signs for the music. I broke the music down into different elements that would need individually animating. In the end I ended up with a few rough symbols that could be mediated and anchored to the sound that it is imitating.

I also thought that by using split screen it would make it easier to animate each instrument and link the visual with the audio.

alien white board

Though I decided against the narrative I decided to experiment with white board animation anyway. Though the final outcome would look amazing I also decided that this method would not produce a strong enough piece of work to play off my strengths. So I decided to look down different forms of animation.

Alien draft.

Here are the key points from my initial draft, In this i thought using a narrative would be a more interesting form of animation. The music reminded me of of alens if it was simplified down to its simplist denotations, which is why i chose a space ship etc for the narrative. This was also highly influenced by the white board animations. I decided against this idea as I felt the narrative approach was not as well suited for the piece of music as narratives stereo typically are. I also didn't want to feel confined to the use of characters as in my opinion the music is more about the feeling.

light graffiti photographs

These are a variety of images that I have taken using light graffiti, I will piece it together on adobe premiere and synchronise it to the music. I have chose to use this based on the alien trancy vibes that i got from the song, I found the song quite trippy and I hope that will be reflected in the animation.
